---- devin had been on the phone with jackson for about forty five minutes so far. they'd began talking just before the beginning of the school year, after they'd met at a restaurant/bar. they'd started seeing eachother just before school started and as soon as it did, things got a little complicated. devin found out that jackson was actually a staff at her high school, a football coach. at first, they stopped seeing eachother. it was the logical choice, the safe choice. to keep both of them out of trouble. legally, first of all, and physically, when it came to devin's father. her father was.. well, it was difficult to describe. he was somewhat abusive. he'd hit devin. and once, just once, he'd snuck into her bedroom in the middle of the night. he did things she never spoke of. since she was young she was very uncomfortable with the topic of sex, and under the circumstances, things got a little more than uncomfortable.
devin kept a lot of these things to herself, even kept them from her sisters, rosalie and kenya. they'd all been put up for adoption when they were young, and they'd been separated. they were triplets. it was just pure luck that all three of them had stayed in byron bay. though devin had only recently returned to byron bay, from a small town in the midwest united states. she had been visiting her mother, at one of the hospitals out there. she'd had brain cancer for several years, and since then, devin had stayed with her. things started to go downhill, and her mother made her leave before.. well, before things got worse than they were. and when she came back to byron bay, one of the first people she encountered was jackson. he was a little drunk, but for some odd reason, devin opened up to him about her mother and how she felt about the situation. and from there, their relationship blossomed. she was too young and naive to understand that things weren't perfect, that because she meets a nice guy, it makes her life so much better. devin's been having trouble with depression the past year, due to the traumatic events that were ongoing in her life. she'd contemplated suicide multiple times, but not since she'd been with jackson. he kept her occupied, entertained, and he set off thousands of butterflies in her stomach any time he was near her. as far as she knew, it was love, because she'd never had an experience quite like it. or an experience somewhat similar, at all.
"you said you'd come over, and when you'd come over, you'd bring girlscout cookies..and i'm still sitting in my bed, cookieless and..jacksonless," she giggled, rolling onto her side in her bed. she hadn't thought about the time for awhile, and it was still far from her mind when she heard footsteps downstairs in the house. she hadn't heard her father pull up, or come in, and she guessed that was because he'd been dropped off and the back door had been opened, with a screen, because it was such a nice day out. her heart immediately began to beat fast and she let out a shaky breath, not realizing jackson was saying something to her from the other end of the line. she rolled out of her bed, the phone still pressed to her ear and headed toward her bedroom door. she peeked out, looking down the hall, left and then right, before looking back left again and seeing her father at the top of the staircase. they locked eyes, and she slipped back into her room and shut the door quite loudly behind her. she heard jackson say something else, and she breathed hard into the reciever. "i think..i'd better go, i think that's a good idea-" she was cut off on her last word when she heard banging on her bedroom door, causing her to jump away from it.
